Story
St Edward’s Way Sponsored Walk
in aid of
Corfe Castle Village Hall and ‘Children in Need’
I'm David Kemp of Corfe Castle. I was looking for a useful way to gain permitted daily exercise, and having exhausted local footpaths I came across St. Edward’s Way, a new 30 mile trail connecting Corfe Castle to Shaftesbury. This looked varied and interesting, linking the Dorset scenery to the dramatic story of St. Edward King and Martyr, who was murdered in Corfe Castle in 978 AD. After a modest burial at Wareham the King’s body was moved to Shaftesbury Abbey for a more royal interment. I felt the route could be walked in a series of 15 stages, each being part of a circular walk back to their starting points.
I decided to seek sponsorship to be shared equally by Corfe Castle Village Hall improvements towards completion of flooring the loft, to benefit Double Act and other Hall users, and BBC Children in Need.
I am walking the sections each appropriate day, depending on weather and other factors, accompanied by another member of ‘Double Act’, as Covid guidelines allow. I aim to complete the whole route, about 70 miles with the return legs, by the end of this year.
Any contributions you are able to make will be gratefully received online via the Just Giving Facebook page ......
For those wishing to pay be cheque or cash please contact me on 01929 480007 or email davimukem@aol.com or use the sponsorship forms based in the local village shops.

4 years agoI've done it! The final section from near Melbury Hill to Shaftesbury Abbey and back via Melbury Beacon was achieved on Dec 17th. A poem about the martyrdom of St Edward was recited at the gate of the Abbey. Total distance walked was about 115 miles overall. Although the walk is done, there's still time to donate - please do!

4 years agoJust two stages to go now, from Iwerne Minster to Melbury Hill (tomorrow), and then Melbury Hill to Shaftesbury. A poem about St Edward will be declaimed when we get to Shaftesbury Abbey. I'm pictured on stage 11, with Elmo, above Turnworth, where my St Edward's Way happens to coincide with the up-to-date pilgrimage route of the same name.

A great achievement. The walk sounds really interesting. Village halls need a lot of public support so well done David.
