Story

Dan Budd, founder of Ukulele Jam and Ukulala based in Thornbury, SGlos, UK.

I've been invited to join a team visiting Spurgeon's Academy in Kenya during the first week of Easter in April 2020. A team of people from the UK will be running a Holiday Club for children aged 7 – 9 who attend the Academy – I have been asked to bring ukuleles and deliver fun based music sessions for the children and staff.

Kibera, on the outskirts of the capital Nairobi, is the largest urban slum in Africa. Heavily polluted by human waste and garbage, estimates vary, but is estimated that up to 1 million people live together in wood and sheet metal shanty homes. At the edge of Kibera, right next to the railway line which marks the outer boundary of the slum, lies Spurgeons Academy. It’s a primary school for the poorest and most vulnerable of Kibera’s citizens – orphaned children.
