Story
Chiropractic is a great career for anybody looking for a job in health care and who wants to make a difference; helping people who are in pain or are unable to perform properly. Back pain is now at epidemic proportions. It is one of the single biggest reasons why people visit their GP, and it costs the NHS over £6 Billion annually. It also results in 10.8 million work days being lost to the economy each year and Chiropractors can really help, but there are simply not enough places for people to train. We are working to increase the number of courses that are available in the public sector, located in areas where the profession is currently under-represented and to encourage school leavers and mature students to think about Chiropractic as an option.
I graduated in 1984 when there were less than 200 Chiropractors in the country, no official recognition and very little understanding of the profession. I have dedicated my working life to helping develop the Chiropractic profession in this country and now we have parliamentary recognition, a Royal College and over 3000 Chiropractors on the General Chiropractic Council's register. But that is still a tiny number in the grand scheme of things. Too many people suffer from debilitating back pain and the NHS simply cannot cope. It has been a great job and I would love to see many more people enjoy it, and therefore many more people benefit from what a Chiropractor can do for them.
Peter Dixon DC FRCC President of The Royal College of Chiropractors Chair of The General Chiropractic Council 2006-2013 Director of The Society for Promoting Chiropractic Education NICE Fellow 2019-2022
The first place in the UK where you could train was at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth. The most recent course has been established at London Southbank University and we are doing a sponsored cycle ride between the oldest and the newest. On September 28th/29th four colleagues and I will ride between LSBU and AECC to raise funds to continue this project, and to talk to school leavers about the benefit of Chiropractic as a career.
