Iʼve raised £285 to create a memorial garden for 'born sleeping' (stillborn) babies in the old Folkestone Cemetery where they were buried without ceremony

Story
To create a special place for 'born sleeping' babies and babies left for dead on the beach or in the cemetery entrance - in an area of the old Folkestone Cemetery, where stillborn babies and found dead babies were buried during 1900's. In those days, without the understanding that mothers may need to see or hold their 'born sleeping' baby to allow them to properly grieve, these un-named babies would be quickly taken away, to reduce their mothers distress. There is no formal record of these babies and mothers were never told where their baby was laid to rest.

3 years agoWith funding raised here on JustGiving and with funding received from one of our sponsers Pavers, we should have enough to provide an interpretation panel telling about the 'born sleeping' babies and the White Garden. I am therefore closing this JustGiving account and transferring the monies raised in the Friends of Old Folkestone cemetery bank account so it is available to pay for the interpretation panel. Thanks to everyone for your kind comments, support, and of course for any donation that you were able to provide.

3 years agoOur volunteers have been busy through December despite the awful weather. Our Council contact Carl has provided us with lots of shrubs and our volunteers have planted them all. We have had to put up rabbit guards around all the shrubs and chicken wire over some of the softer shrubs for protection. But so far - right at the end of December, the shrubs are surviving. Come spring they will start to grow and will look wonderful. Carl has also provided us with a bench - and in spring will tidy up the pathway (if resources are available).
