Evia Fires: The largest environmental catastrophe in Greece. Life on the Greek island of Evia will never be the same after the catastrophic fires of last August.
Greece lost more than a million acres of woodland, including an enormous swath of forest on its second largest island, Evia.
One of the villages that suffered huge damages in 99% of its area is Kourkouli. A small village of 450 people needs our help. We got in contact with the president of the local Council, Mr Vasilis Christodoulou and he has sent us the following letter (translated from Greek).
''Dear Gentlemen,
After the recent fires in North Evia, which were admittedly the most destructive in the history of our homeland, our village Kourkouli, suffered huge damages in 99% of its area.
Following the above, the immediate need for timber for the construction of stables, stumps, feeders, fodder arises in order to restore primarily livestock and then other infrastructure of the community, so that residents are not forced to leave their place.
We would also appreciate your support for the restoration of the damages in our primary school, which is emotionally the jewel of our place.
Invoking your special sensitivities on this issue, we thank you in advance for any help.
With all our respect
President Vasilis Christodoulou and members of the Council of village Kourkouli''
To cover all the above needs (for all people affected) the estimated cost is around 20,000 - 25,000 pounds. Let's help them cover as much as possible and give these people a chance to stay in their village!
