    Story

Buy supplies to make 50 visors mounted cooling fans for #NHSHeroes & key workers - of course, we intend to make many more than this

With medical staff and carers having to wear face visors or goggles to protect them against Coronavirus, we had the idea of designing a visor mounted cooling fan that people could make at home or work for their local #NHSHeroes and to #CareForCarers.

    Design

A miniature 5V fan (40x40mm) is glued into a 3D printed housing, which is designed to fit onto face visors or goggles, providing a gentle breeze across the face.

It is powered by a USB battery pack, which are typically used to power mobile phones, connected to the fan by a 1.5m cable. The long cable enables the battery pack to be placed in the user's pocket to keep the weight off their head.

    Why help?

Medical staff and care workers are having to wear safely visors or goggles and plastic PPE garments to protect them from Coronavirus. As the summer approached we were concerned about the comfort of these people working in warm hospitals and care homes.

We would like to encourage people to help improve thing by making cooling fans for their local heroes. Providing a gentle breeze will hopefully be a small step to more bearable working conditions and show that we care.

    How can you help?

Help us by signing up to make fans - Each visor consists of a fan which is soldered onto a USB cable cut in half - this is then glued into a 3D printed enclosure. The fan and the cable cost around £5 thanks to the support of CPC (Farnell) who are providing special prices. There are detailed instructions provided as well as the 3D printing file.

What if I don't have a 3D printer or cannot solder?

If you want to help but cannot do everything, perhaps because you don't have a 3D printer then please send us an email saying what you might be able to do. We will try and match you up with other people so that between you, you can produce some fans.

If you cannot manufacture anything, we're sure we can find people to build the fans if you can raise the money to buy the materials.
