Story

UPDATE:
Well it's completed. We cycled all the way there -it took us 4.5 hours and the final hill before Tongue on the way there was unexpected and shockingly long.
The walk was fine- very steep at the start and then evened out at the top- everyone made it- we didn't leave anyone behind!
On the Sunday morning there were 35 mile an hour gusts of wind and non-stop rain Tongue- but we decided to give it a go anyway. The weather really improved as we cycled- On the way back by bicycle we made it a bit more leisurely- we had a few stops- in Altnaharra (the coldest place in Britain!) and at the Crask Inn - Hmmm Toasties! And because we knew the route it seemed a lot easier.
We finished it dry, sun burned and happy.

I work for Headway Glasgow a small charity that works with people with acquired brain injury. What we try to do is provide information, support and services for people with a brain injury and their carers (and anyone else interested too). We are wee and underfunded Please sponsor me or a team member to climb Ben Hope - Scotland's most Northerly Munro. We are doing it on the 28th August 2010.

Scott Prentice, Bryan Dickson, Norman Philip and I are all going to cycle from Lairg (about 35 miles away) the day before the walk and back the next day- to try and prove 40 isn't old.

How does Headway work?: here is a true example:

Allan Harvie had a spontaneous brain haemorrhage in November. After surgery and two weeks in hospital he was discharged home- he was walking and talking and was not seen as a priority for rehabilitation within the hospital service. He found out about Headway Glasgow through the internet and in January contacted us to make an appointment. At that stage he was having difficulty with dizziness, vision, speech, emotions, and fatigue. We were able to reassure him that these were common outcomes of a brain injury and give him information booklets to explain why these things would happen and what you could do to help. We identified that as he stayed in West Dumbarton Council area there was a social work team which might be able to provide some specialist support. He was referred to this team which enable him to undertake inpatient cognitive rehabilitation. He was also able to attend the groups that Headway offered and in the Drop In group he met other people who had been through something similar. He says it gave him hope for his future to see that things would get better over time. Months later Allan is still involved in the group and is using some of his skills to talk to new users coming to the group to welcome them in and also has become involved in the management group.   (Names Changed)

Last time I told you we are pretty poorly funded and we do what we do on a shoestring really. If you can help please do,

Thank You,

Simon Glen

UPDATE: Thanks for all the donations offline. Particularly my Sister Louise, Rose, Les, Stan and Cate and all the folk in Headway. training is getting sore now!
