Hello,
My name is Chris Pringle and I am walking all of Hadrian's Wall from coast to coast over six days in September 2010. I am doing it for the British Heart Foundation and in memory of my father who died 3 years ago.
About the British Heart Foundation:
Nothing kills more people than heart and circulatory disease. It's the UK's biggest killer, responsible for over 200,000 deaths a year - that's a staggering 547 people a day.
As the nation's heart charity, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) saves lives every day by funding ground breaking research. Their information on heart health helps people keep their hearts healthy. They care for heart patients and support their families. Their campaigns help improve the lives of those living with heart disease now and fight for a healthy heart future for everyone across North Devon and North Cornwall.
About The Appeal:
The BHF Moving Hearts Appeal aims to raise £38,000 towards the cost of new state of the art portable echocardiograph (echo) machine for use at the North Devon District Hospital, which is actually where my father died. Life-saving equipment like this is expensive, but it's vital to save and improve more lives in North Devon and North Cornwall.
About The Echo- How Does It Save Lives?
An echo is a specialist machine used to examine the structure of the heart. During an echo scan, a probe is placed on the chest and a pulse of high frequency sound is passed through the skin. The echoes reflected by the pulse are displayed as an image on a monitor. These completely painless scans provide an excellent diagnostic tool that enable cardiologists to detect, or rule out, numerous heart conditions. A portable echo machine is laptop size and lightweight, so it can be moved where it is needed - the patient's bedside. This means not having to move patients who are not in good health.
