This is the Tale of Mopsy, now known as Pippa Bunny and how she came to be at Camp Nibble....

We had been visited in the garden, by what we thought was a wild rabbit who we called Mopsy and she was present for about 6 weeks. I would emphasise that had she indeed been a wild rabbit, we would have left well alone, but when after about a month, we happened to be in the garden at the same time and she came up to be hand-fed, allowed us to stroke her and followed us round the garden, there was clearly more to the story. She seemed fit and healthy but we did feel her vision was not particularly good, despite her shining brown eyes. The road can be a busy one, there is the odd cat and quite a few dogs about and certainly all manner of foxes and weasels about, so I would imagine the life expectancy of a wild rabbit is not that high. For one that had previously been a pet, it must be virtually non-existent, so it is amazing that she had lasted so long.

She started off cadging dandelion leaves and had done a brilliant job of mowing the lawn for us and had graduated onto broccoli and carrot. Despite some investigation, we could not trace the owner who had abandoned her to her fate but she hopped back and forth between the gardens and very much enjoyed munching her way through the neighbour's vegetable patch. One morning dawned rather grey and misty and hubby came out of the front door only to find the sad demise of a little rabbit, we had seen her with. I was very relieved to see Mopsy in the back garden later but also equally concerned that she would fall prey to whatever was prowling about. At 3.30am I found myself checking out the window to see if I could see anything and in fact bunny did not put in an appearance the next day until lunchtime and as soon as I got close, I could see that she had been injured....two gouges out of her ear and blooded...she was wary and frightened and I just felt so sorry for her.

 I  contacted a bunny rescue place who although full, advised taking her to the vet to see if she was micro chipped and to sort the injuries out as the hot weather would not be helping matters. First catch your bunny....the first mention of the word 'vet' in the confines of the kitchen and she legged it out the garden! LOL We managed to shepherd her later into a makeshift bunny run and then into an old travelling bunny box we had from years ago, and she was as good as gold in the car. Suitably injected with antibiotics and dosed with flea treatment, the vet pronounced her female and in very good condition considering her ordeal. But the vet couldn't take her in either and so hubby set about building a hasty hutch and rabbit run...so that she was at least safe.

 We could only have bunny for a week as we had other commitments and this is where the wonderful Hannah at Camp Nibble came in as she agreed to take her in an as emergency. The four days that we looked after Mopsy were hard work.... the person on the supermarket checkout looked somewhat surprised as I piled up kale, pak choi and watercress, obviously assuming it was the latest fad diet! LOL With the weather so hot, we kept a close eye on her, putting wet towels over the run to keep her cool....for us she had become a much loved friend and a very special bunny who deserved much better than her previous uncaring owner.

 On the Monday afternoon, we set out for Leeds in the rush hour, with Mopsy in the travel box,  an iced bottle wrapped in a towel to keep her cool and plenty of hay to nibble. If I had any qualms about leaving our bunny friend, then on arrival these were quickly dispelled. Hannah picked her up and cuddled her, found an older injury that the vet had missed and pronounced her a lovely bunny. She could not have been in safer hands and hopped about the pen so happily. We left fresh veggies, hay, water bottle and donation with Hannah as a contribution towards having her. I left it a few days to let her settle in and then emailed to see how she was doing. My goodness I could not have expected the news I received back. :o  Mopsy had been renamed Pippa after me, a lady had fallen in love with her already and had offered her a new home but that on the Thursday morning, when Hannah had gone to check her, she found that despite no signs, she had become a Mum...to 8 tiny baby kits!!

 

Obviously this presents poor Hannah with a major challenge ahead which is why I decided to try and do my bit to help raise funds as taking on 9 bunnies is rather different to taking on 1! I hope that the quiz sheet will be a major success....it is after all, only £2 and going to such a great cause and to someone who loves and cares for her rescued animals with such devotion. I hope that we can raise the ambitious target and more...thank you! :)

 A little update to Pippa's story.....the baby bunnies are going to have lots of love and attention so that they get used to being handled and before they are all neutered and vaccinated. Pippa will receive the same treatment and the good news is, that she has been reserved by a lovely lady and if she bonds with her new bunny husband, she will become....well....wait for it... Pippa Middleton....!! :) 

Sadly the latest news today October 6th, is that Toby Middleton is a poorly bunny at present and Hannah has reluctantly put Pippa back up for rehoming. We do wish Toby an excellent recovery! On a more positive note, Pippa has had all her vaccinations and been neutered and is fit and well and now looking for a new home where she will be loved by her new owners after such a sad start.....
