The iconic sound of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine remains an enduring airshow favourite for millions, never ceasing to draw eyes skyward. Yet one iconic Merlin-powered aircraft remains absent from UK skies – the de Havilland Mosquito.
This is a warbird restoration unlike any other. The People’s Mosquito will serve as a memorial to the passion, commitment and bravery of those who helped to design, build and operate this ground-breaking aircraft during WW2 and the post-war years. Our Mossie will be built in the UK, where the aircraft was originally conceived, utilising modern British engineering excellence.
In the next 12 months, we are seeking to raise £499,000 to complete the front-end engineering and design critical to ensuring the successful delivery of an aircraft fully compliant with UK Civil Aviation Authority regulations.
Every £ spent on front end engineering will save £s later in the build.
Working with Retrotec Ltd, one of the world’s foremost heritage aircraft restoration companies, we have a detailed five-year engineering plan to return the Mosquito to British skies.
What will successful funding mean?
It will enable Retrotec to utilise our unique historical record of more than 22,000 original de Havilland technical drawings – constituting the largest single collection of Mosquito data in the world – to develop exact computer aided design (CAD) models for the airframe. Funding will also support crucial UK CAA due diligence from the project outset and fund the fabrication of the Mosquito’s unique fuselage mould, so critical to the design’s success.
Why is the Mosquito so important?
The Wooden Wonder proved itself as the world’s first true multi-role combat aircraft. At a time of unparalleled technological innovation, the combination of the Mosquito’s composite wooden construction and Rolls-Royce Merlin engines delivered world beating performance.
