Story

The British Racing School, based in 150 acres of land just outside Newmarket is the racing industry’s leading training provider. Set up as a Charity in 1983 its primary aim is to train 16-18 school leavers for a job as a stable staff and riders. It runs free residential courses throughout the year open to anyone who wishes to join the industry.

The school is rated Ofsted “Good” and ISI [independent Schools Inspectorate] “Excellent”. It also runs a variety of other courses such Ground Based Yard Staff, Jockey Training and Trainers Modules. Recent graduates include the last three Champion Apprentices - Oisin Murphy, Tom Marquand and Josephine Gordon and the last four Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Newcomer Winners - Ben James, Jessica Fortt, Laura Winstanley and Elisha Whittington.Rory MacDonald OBE was Chief Executive of the British Racing School for 22 years and is largely responsible for the school as it is today and much of the training programmes available to those wishing to enter racing or working in racing. He retired in the summer of 2014 and died very suddenly in November 2015 aged 66.

The Rory MacDonald Memorial Fund has been establish in his name. The aim of the Charity Cycle Ride is to raise funds to train those for whom the school does not receive Government funding. Our aim is to raise £50,000 from this cycle towards this fund.   Staff from the British Racing School, along with guest riders from the industry will be cycling between 7 racecourses in 7 days, the route they will take is as follows:

Sunday 28th May: Musselburgh to Kelso arriving on Ladies Day. Monday 29th May: Kelso to Hexham

Tuesday 30th May: Hexham to Redcar Wednesday 31st May: Redcar to Beverley

Thursday 1st June: Beverley to Market Rasen Friday 2nd June: Market Rasen to Fakenham

Saturday 3rd June: Fakenham then home to the British Racing School
