Story

Hull Hospitals and WISHH have already seen some incredible generosity from many members of the community and would like to thank all of the amazing companies, individuals and organisations who have already come forward offering support to our staff and hospitals for the care we are providing patients during the COVID-19 outbreak. However, there is still room for us to help our hospital get through this.

We are in unprecedented times and will rely increasingly heavily on the wonderful staff of the NHS to see us through. The Hull University Teaching Hospitals official Charity WISHH is working closely with the hospitals to identify ways we can help. They know best what support they need from us all and this is only the start. Supporting staff is key, many are finding it difficult to take a break for refreshment. WISHH has given £5,000 to the hospitals towards supporting staff which includes providing drinks and snacks to wards and departments but this demand will be on-going. The COVID-19 fundraising campaign WISHH has launched will support staff and patient care. Decisions as to how money raised is allocated to what is needed will be led by the hospitals working together with WISHH. We need our Hospitals more than ever now." - Sue Lockwood, WISHH Chairman and former High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire

Thanks to the fantastic support we received as a result of this campaign, we were able to support our hospitals in a number of ways. Here are just a few of them:

* Supporting the introduction of 40 sanctuary rooms across our hospitals for staff to take time out away from the work environment and recharge, by providing distraction boxes containing mindfulness and wellbeing information, signposting and distraction activities e.g. colouring books, puzzles and snacks.

* Providing new and additional furniture for outdoor areas for staff and patients to use.

* Face, hand and barrier creams to soothe skin following continued wearing of PPE and the provision of hundreds of Wellbeing packs for staff seeking emotional support from occupational health teams and the pastoral support team. The packs included personal hygiene products, body lotions and hand creams and other goodies and a positive thank you note to recipients.

* Providing new and replacement facilities in staff rooms across our hospitals including the Queens Centre, Women and Children's Hospital, Paediatrics and other wards as well as a full refurbishment of the staff room in the Emergency Department.

* Supporting established community groups in the production of extra scrubs for Hull Hospitals clinical staff.

* Provision of iPads/tablets to enable staff to access welfare support, make contact between patients and their loved ones easier and other personal use.

* Supporting the Trust in providing free refreshments and snacks for staff across Hull Hospitals and making access to these at more locally accessible areas close to wards and departments.

* Supporting the ICU with wellbeing items and packs and the provision of IT to enable staff to access Trust mindfulness and wellbeing apps.

Thanks to your support and from funding provided by NHS Charities Together, we are able to create an incredible long term facility to support the mental health and wellbeing of hospital staff at Castle Hill Hospital. This facility will enable staff to receive the emotional and wellbeing support as they continually deal with so many difficult situations, caring for the seriously ill and their families during the pandemic and beyond. This facility will provide a lasting legacy which will help support staff, to build their emotional resilience whilst delivering great care for patients at our hospitals. We hope to create a similar facility at Hull Royal Infirmary using any further donations that we receive. Read more about the facility here.
