Story
A little from the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia:
We are currently incubating 627 terrapin eggs, and assuming 70% of them hatch, we would need to purchase 440 microchips. That means we'd need to raise MYR8,800 (GBP1,500) before August.
Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia (TCS) was founded out of necessity in 2011 because co-founders Drs. Chan Eng Heng and Chen Pelf Nyok realised that there wasnt an organisation or agency in charge of the tortoises and freshwater turtles in the country, despite being home to 18 native species.
TCS is the first non-governmental and non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of freshwater turtles in Malaysia. The aim of the Society is to bring about the recovery of depleted wild populations of turtles, with particular reference to freshwater turtles, in Malaysia through partnerships with like-minded organisations, individuals and local communities as well as through its own programmes.
Number of head-started terrapin hatchlings released into the Kemaman River from 2011 to 2019. Hatchlings from 2020 are currently being head-started:
120 = Number of adult female terrapins microchipped (2011 - 2018)
5850 = Number of terrapin eggs saved from human consumption (2011 - 2020)
3799 = Number of terrapin hatchlings produced (2011 - 2020)
3169 = Number of terrapins released into the Kemaman River (2011 - 2019)
