Story

When you visit your doctor, you expect to leave with a diagnosis. Its human nature to need answers.

But for 500,000 Australian children, a diagnosis never comes, because their disease is rarely seen (previously undescribed or a rare form of a common disease). So they and their families are left to live in unbearable uncertainty, not knowing what tomorrow will bringvisit after visit, year after year.

The Undiagnosed Diseases Program is putting an end to that uncertainty.

The Undiagnosed Diseases Program is a landmark in Australian medical history. Lead by Dr Gareth Baynam, the groundbreaking initiative brings together specialist doctors, new technology, and perspectives to provide breakthrough diagnoses and a beacon of hope for thousands of children and families.

But they need your support.

The Undiagnosed Diseases Program is funded by the generosity of people like you.

A success story:

Meet Lily. (Pictured above)

Lily was born prematurely at 34 weeks with an undiagnosed rare disease. By seven years of age, she and her family had endured hundreds of appointments and over-night hospital visits to no avail. Crippling symptoms, invasive tests, and uncertainty was a daily reality, making any form of normality impossible for them.

Dr Gareth Baynam approached Lilys family in 2017, asking them if she could be the first patient of The Undiagnosed Diseases Program. They said yes.

He connected the best of the bestthe finest specialists in Perthand put them around a table to solve Lilys 7-year-long fight for a diagnosis.

The result? They had an answer in twenty minutes. She was diagnosed with Trichohepatoenteric syndrome, a one-in-a-million rare condition affecting the hair, liver and intestines.

Doctors are now able to better monitor Lilys health, reducing the number of hospitalizations and improving her quality of life. Today, Lily is a happy, confident 12-year-old who is now enjoying a more regular childhood.

The Undiagnosed Diseases Program exists to help children like Lily. Because there are are a lot like her. 63,000 in WA alone.

It is a lonely and stressful journey.

But by supporting the Undiagnosed Diseases Program, we can change the lives of these children and families.

Every dollar counts.
