Story
In 1968 Tony Brown, Harvey Sheldon and their team of archaeologists found a remarkably well-preserved Roman pottery kiln in the substantial Roman pottery manufacturing site in Highgate Wood.
The kiln is the only Roman pottery kiln in Greater London to have been lifted and conserved, and was stored in the cellars of Bruce Castle Museum hidden from public view. This extraordinary 2000 year old survival needs to be seen and needs tender loving care so that it does not deteriorate.
The charity Friends of Highgate Roman Kiln (FOHRK) was established to bring the Highgate kiln back to the Wood where it was made and exhibit it in a secure setting as the focus of an exciting learning programme in crafts and heritage. Educational activities include experimental archaeology, such as experiments based on Roman pottery-making in the Wood in previous years, specially designed curriculum materials, and inclusive online and face-to-face community learning opportunities.
FOHRK is a registered charity, no. 1177405. The patrons of the charity are Claire Skinner and Hugh Dennis who say, “Highgate Wood plays a large part in our daily lives and we have always been intrigued by its history. We would love to see the kiln re-instated for people to enjoy.”
The Trustees of FOHRK and their partners, the City of London Corporation Highgate Wood team, Bruce Castle Museum warmly welcome any support you can give.
