Story

THE FLYING SCOTSMAN CHALLENGE: RUNNING FOR EARLY SUPPORT

Stratford‑upon‑Avon runner James Morrison has committed to raising £5,000 for Lifespace through an extraordinary guided race challenge across 2026–27.

James is a visually impaired runner who began losing his sight following a routine eye test in 2018. Since then, he has lived through significant physical and mental health challenges. Running – supported by guide runners at every event – became a way to rebuild confidence, routine and resilience.

The Flying Scotsman Challenge is James’ long‑term commitment to Lifespace. Across more than 12 organised races, he will complete over 110 miles of guided racing, supported by an average of 120km of training every week. James said:

Running helped me rebuild my life because the right support was there at the right time. Lifespace does that for children and young people every day – helping them earlier, before life becomes overwhelming. That’s why I wanted to fundraise for them.

A CHALLENGE THAT GOES FAR BEYOND THE FINISH LINE

The Flying Scotsman Challenge is a long‑term commitment. Across more than 12 organised races, James will complete over 110 miles of guided racing, supported by an average of 120km of training every week.

Across the programme of events, James will run alongside an estimated 37,000 other runners. Conservatively, we calculate that more than 50,000 people, including spectators, will witness the challenge across race days.

This visibility offers a powerful platform to raise awareness of inclusion, early support and emotional wellbeing, and to show what can be achieved when the right understanding and support are in place.

WHY THIS CHALLENGE MATTERS TO LIFESPACE

At Lifespace, we support children and young people as soon as life gets tough, and for as long as they need. Working in close partnership with schools and communities, we provide early, preventative emotional wellbeing support that helps young people feel heard, understood and supported before difficulties escalate.

Everything we do is guided by three core pillars: Reduce Distress, Build Resilience and Achieve More. Lisa Carroll, Lifespace CEO, added:

We are absolutely delighted to be working with James on this challenge. His story, commitment and values align so closely with Lifespace’s purpose. Lifespace exists to support children and young people when life feels difficult. Our work is rooted in reducing distress, building resilience and helping young people achieve more than they ever thought possible. James’ challenge brings those principles to life in a very visible and human way. It highlights just how powerful early support can be, and we’re incredibly grateful for his support of our work.”
