Story

Scientists estimate that one million species, out of a total eight million, are currently threatened with extinction. As Sir David Attenborough said in last year's BBC documentary, 'Extinction: the Facts', 'We face a frightening future'.

A Rocha has been working in nature conservation since 1983. One of our distinctives in the environmental world is our firm hold on hope. We are not naïve, but we choose to behave today caring for all God has made as if tomorrow is coming.

We also have hope because we have seen how conservation works; there are many stories of places, plants and animals that are still here today thanks to A Rocha supporters:

In Kenya, A Rocha is carrying out research and running community conservation projects to protect the Dakatcha Woodland and the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest both remnants of dry coastal forest with a high number of rare birds and creatures such as the Sokoke Scops-owl. With help from others, A Rocha Kenya is creating a nature reserve to conserve this unique landscape and safeguard its precious inhabitants.

In India, Bannerghatta National Park a dry deciduous scrub forest provides a key habitat for the Asian Elephant. Because the park lies just outside Bangalore, the sprawling growth of the city is increasing interactions between people and elephants, with casualties on both sides. A Rocha India is examining the farmers' use of the landscape to get a clearer understanding of these issues and developing creative ideas such as elephant-proof barriers to help solve them.

But the threat to these precious and vulnerable species is ongoing. Will you give today to support A Rocha scientists working to protect nature at risk, like the Sokoke Scops-owl in Kenya and the Asian Elephant in India?
