Story

Oswestry Dial-a-Ride is in urgent need of donations towards a new minibus. This valuable volunteer led service supports hundreds of people get to where they need to go. With over 22,000 journeys each year we really need your help to get a new minibus! Can you help us raise £10,000? Any donations, small or large, will help us reach our goal.

Here are just some of the people we have helped recently:

Shirley visits her husband every day at a nursing home and uses Dial-a-Ride. She also uses the service to take him out at the weekend for family lunches where he is able to be a part of a birthday party or celebration.

The daughter of a passenger who regularly used Dial-a-Ride asked us to transport some of his neighbours to her fathers funeral. None of the residents could drive but wanted to go and pay their respects. We were able to transport them from Oswestry to Shrewsbury and back again. The family were very grateful for our support.

A funeral directors in Shrewsbury called us to ask if we could help transport a lady to her husband's funeral. The lady had been housebound for three years and therefore wouldn't be able to use the cars provided by them and she also wanted to take her mobility scooter with her. She was extremely nervous about coming out but it was of huge importance to her to go to the funeral. Our volunteers met the funeral cortege in Ellesmere and followed it to the farm house. The lady was able to access the bus using the lift and we loaded the scooter for her. After the service was held we were able to take her to a local restaurant for the wake and then home a couple of hours later.

Chris, who had recently become a paraplegic, wanted to visit some friends in his hometown of Coventry. He was living at the rehabilitation unit in Oswestry which is attached to RJAH in Gobowen. We arranged for a driver to take him to Coventry and bring him home a few hours later. When they arrived at the address in Coventry his friends were ready and waiting and carried him in his wheelchair into the house.

Eric, who lives in St Martins, wanted to take his dog to Ellesmere for a walk. He needs to use a scooter as well so we picked him up from home, loaded his scooter on the bus and took him and his dog to the Mere. We returned to collect him a couple of hours later to take them home.

Quotes from our customers:

I wouldn't get out if it wasn't for Dial-a-Ride .

The volunteers are great - so patient and caring.

Dial-a-Ride is a life line for me, I think of you all as friends .
