The history books have Creag Choinnich as the oldest recorded hill race dating back to 1064. King Malcolm II (King Malcolm Canmore) looking for the fastest man to deliver his despatches arranged the race up Creag Choinnich. The first home was the younger of two MacGregor brothers who received "a handsome sword, a baldric and a purseful of gold" (a baldric is a belt worn like a sash to support a sword).
The race is now run from Braemar Castle by the Junior Highland Games Committee annually in June, however with continuing uncertainties over the pandemic, the race will not be going ahead in 2021.
BUT WAIT, for 1 year only, we are bringing the hill race to you. The team at Braemar Castle CHALLENGE you to run the equivalent of the hill race (4km), not once but 10 times, during the month of June - there is an ascent of 250m which you can choose to add to the challenge. IF YOU CAN'T RUN WHY NOT WALK, CRAWL OR CYCLE? Every mile, and everyone's effort counts!
Join us for the kick-off event on the 1st June at 7pm from Braemar Castle - there you can collect your bright pink participant t-shirt, meet other participants (socially distanced) and enjoy the run!
Our target is to smash the £1,000 goal and there is a prize for the person who raises the most funds during the challenge.
In the process we ask for you to help us fundraise for the restoration of the beautiful Braemar Castle.
Strengthen your mind and body in this running challenge whether you actually run up Creag Choinnich 10 times in the month of June or manage the equivalent distance where you live, this challenge will focus the mind, give you a huge sense of satisfaction and you will be supporting charity.
This is Our Castle, Your Castle and we want to empower everyone to reach their goals in life no matter how seemingly big or small.
The hill race will return on the 22 June 2022 from 7pm for registration, starting at Braemar Castle.
