Story
Denyigba Lorlor have been planting trees in the Volta Region, Ghana, for over five years. Previous projects have seen thousands of trees planted in schools, communities and along roads. Denyigba plant a mixture of native trees, including cassia, acacia, mango, coconut, cashew and avocado. The trees provide food, income, shade, and help to regenerate the soil.
In 2024 Denyigba Lorlor are implementing the feedback from local stakeholders to maximise the impact of their tree planting efforts. Focusing on two locations in the Volta Region, Keta Lagoon and Atsiame Basic School, Denyigba are planting 200 coconut trees for school children and local community members to grow to provide food and income in years to come.
In Keta Lagoon coconut trees help to bind the fragile coastline together, an area highly vulnerable to coastal erosion. Many mature coconut trees are visible along the picturesque coastline, providing shade for fishermen to fix their nets, and refreshing coconuts to enjoy. The coconuts planted here will be looked after by the Chief Fishermen of Keta Lagoon, and was a direct request from the fishermen after previous planting projects.
Atsiame Basic School took part in Denyigba's 2021 'Big Plant Out' that saw 10,000 trees planted across various locations in the Keta Municipality. The success of the previous project has led to the school requesting additional trees, so the students can again take part in a planting project. Educating the students to properly tend to the trees and be able to see them grow throughout their time at the school is an important part of Denyigba's mission to make tree planting and care for the natural environment a part of every Ghanaian's life.
