Story
Diagnosed the day before my 41st Birthday with a rare form of abdominal Cancer called PMP (Pseudomyxoma Peritonea), I was referred to The Christie Hospital in Manchester where I was told that without a major operation (including having heated chemotherapy washed around my abdomen), I had less than 4 years to live.
Major surgery and a scar from crotch to breastbone later and I was struggling for fitness again. A recurrence 18 months later with more aggressive Cancer cells involved saw me undergoing further surgery including the removal of most of the right side of my abdominal muscles and having a pad and mesh sewn in to replace them. More recovery...
But recover I have, and 2013 sees me over 5 years past my initial diagnosis, and while my Cancer is not cureable, I remain free from disease at present. My first race (Southport Mad Dog 10K) saw me slash over 2 minutes off my Personal Best time, and April will see me pass 6 years since diagnosis. My survival is, I'm certain, due in no small part to my running and fitness, and so I plan to run the Manchester Marathon in aid of The Christie hospital who work so tirelessly to ensure I get to celebrate each new anniversary...
