Story
On Thursday October 10 2013, the GVI Seychelles Cap Ternay Expedition Base will compete in the beaches of Mahé challenge. This event will raise money for the Presidents Village Children's Home which is GVI Seychelles’ Charitable Trust.
Multiple teams of volunteers and staff will compete in a series of adventures and challenges around the island through the day. Teams will have to work together to navigate from beach to beach and complete a list of challenges set along the way.
Set on some of the most beautiful beaches of Mahé, the winning team will complete the most challenges with points also awarded to the team who raised the highest funds. The event will raise funds and awareness for GVI’s work with the President’s Village Children’s Home as well as providing teams with a day of fun filled adventure around Mahé.
The Presidents Village Children’s Home cares for children who are orphans or have parents that are not able to look after them. Some have been abused while others have disabilities or learning difficulties. All are in need of care and the home provides a safe environment for them to live. The President’s Village is currently home to approximately 60 children, ages 6 months to 18 years.
GVI volunteers do extra-curricular activities with children from the President’s Village as part of their expedition here in Seychelles. Volunteers take the kids out on weekly snorkels, teaching them about various marine creatures while having fun splashing around and giving the kids some much needed individual attention. Volunteers also do quarterly Creole Days at the President’s Village, which is a day of arts, crafts, fun and games for all of the children at the home. This year the volunteers have completed a new mural at the President’s Village, painting a colorful map of Seychelles on the wall.
Money raised by volunteers goes to support all of these extra-curricular activities and more. At Christmas time, GVI buys gifts for each of the children. Throughout the year GVI purchase much needed items such as clothing and school supplies and supports various trips for the children, helping to create memories for them that they wouldn’t otherwise have.
This year, we are starting a new a renewable energy project for the President’s village. In addition to funding extra-curricular activities for the children, the money raised by GVI will be used to purchase, install and maintain a solar energy system. The project will have multiple phases and the ultimate goal would be to have the President’s Village running on solar power energy, which would reduce the cost of their utilities and also help conserve valuable resources.
Friends and family across the globe can support the volunteers and the President’s Village by making a donation online. All contributions are greatly appreciated and go directly to the GVI’s President’s Village Charitable Trust account. Be sure to note your volunteer’s name in the comments section, as teams get bonus points for raising funds and prizes will be awarded to the top individual fundraisers.
Help us reach our goal of £1500 by October 10, every penny helps!
