19th Bataan Memorial Death March · 25 February 2008
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.
The Bataan Memorial Death March is an event to commemorate the thousands of US servicemen who died whilst being forced marched through the jungles of the Philippines after their capture by the Japanese in 1942.
The event takes place in the New Mexico Desert at an average altitude of 1600m above sea level. It is 26.2 miles across soft sand and hills and for the category I am entering in involves carrying a 35 lb bergan on my back.
I am doing the event to raise money for Help For Heroes to give something back to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court, where I spent five months as a patient learning how to walk and use my arms again after being wounded in action in Afghanistan at the end of last April by an RPG. The injuries I suffered to all my limbs have left me with paralysis in my right arm and leg which just adds to the challenge on the day!
All the money donated on this website will go to Help For Heroes as flights etc have been paid for by other sponsors. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Help for Heroes will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor me now!
Many thanks for your support.
The event was completed in 6:27:15 placing me 23 out of 290 in the category that I entered (A total of 4500 competitors entered). Temperatures were at 40 degrees C and windspeeds of 30 mph were recorded. My bergan weighed 45lbs at the finish line.
Many thanks to all those who have sponsored us so far.
