Thanks to all those who have donated to our badger vaccination programme so far this year!  Your donations have enabled us to continue vaccinating our much loved badgers for another year

We are grateful of any donation big or small and welcome donations all year round to allow us to continue vaccinating badgers each year 

As well as vaccinating badgers, we continue our campaign work that calls on the Government to bring an end to the needless culling of badgers immediately. The Wildlife Trusts have opposed the culling of badgers as a solution to the problem of bTB in cattle, and instead have called on the Government to implement a cattle vaccine, review how cattle are transported around the country to ensure measures are in place to prevent infection spread from cattle to cattle, and fund badger vaccination across the UK.

A huge thank you to all those who have donated to Staffordshire Wildlife Trusts Badger Vaccination program so far, we are so thankful to these supporters. The donations allow us to continue this vital work. 

Recent Government proposals suggested an end to granting cull licenses in 2022, but this could still result in another 130,000 badgers being killed over the next four years.

As cull licenses last up to four years, the culling of badgers is likely not to end until at least 2026. Over this period, 12,000 more badgers could be culled in Staffordshire and 130,000 UK-wide killed needlessly. 2,791 Staffordshire badgers were culled under the DEFRA license in 2020.

Culling is not the answer. The Trust along with other Wildlife Trusts across the UK are calling on the Government to:

1. Stop issuing badger cull licenses immediately. This will bring an end to the badger cull sooner than proposed, saving tens of thousands of badgers.

2. Implement a cattle vaccine. Cattle vaccination offers the best long-term way to reduce bovine TB in the cattle population.

3. Review how cattle are transported around the country and ensure measures are in place to prevent infection spread from cattle to cattle.

4. Fast track the transition from culling to badger vaccination

Staffordshire Wildlife Trust is continuing to vaccinate badgers in Staffordshire in 2020 and we are grateful for supporters' donations to allow us to continue this work.

Earlier on in 2020 the government announced that they were planning to invest in a cattle vaccine and to phase out the culling by 2025 but the Trust is warning that 2025 is too long to wait for a vaccine and we are calling on an immediate end to the ineffective culling of badgers who are a protected species. A recent report leaked details that Staffordshire is set to have badger culling once again implemented in 2020 by the government. We are very saddened by this news. 

The Government’s own research has shown that culling badgers is not the answer and whilst we await a cattle vaccine, vaccinating badgers is cheaper, more humane and more environmentally friendly then culling.

Despite the announcements from Government, we have yet to see any real progress from them outlining concrete plans and proposals, and progress appears slow. Time is of the essence here

HELP SAVE OUR BADGERS

The Trust believes that vaccination of badgers against bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is currently the most effective way of reducing the risk of badger to cattle transmission of the disease. 

It will cost £25,000 to run the vaccination programme for the next five years. We need your help to fund this important work - to pay for essential veterinary supplies, equipment and staff training.

Please give as much as you can afford.

£10 - buys enough peanuts to bait one trap for two weeks

£20 - buys a dose of the vaccine and a syringe

£50 - buys personal protective equipment to keep a vaccinator working effectively and safely

£100 - buys one badger cage trap

£350 buys an annual FERA certificate of competence for one vaccinator - a legal requirement for the work

£750 - buys professional training for a staff member to safely handle and capture badgers and deliver the programme
