Story

We did it!

On Sunday November 19th my daughter and I walked the 10KM Mouth Cancer Awareness Walk at Hyde Park.  Between us we have raised around £1,300 for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and there's still more coming in.  If you would like to donate you can do it here!  Just click on the 'sponsor us now' link above - this page will stay open until January.

Thanks to everyone who has donated so far, and also to all our friends who have been so supportive.  You can see photos from the walk here.

The story leading up to the walk is below.

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

My mother was diagnosed with advanced mouth cancer in August 2006. I have read so many things about this condition since and was amazed to find out that this kind of cancer kills more people every year than breast cancer and cervical cancer, both of which (quite rightly) get so much publicity.  It's time that mouth cancer awareness reached these levels.  Early detection, as with all cancers, is the key.

I am also concerned about the poor provision of NHS dental treatment.  My mother was unable to afford private care and had not been to a dentist for many years, after her practice stopped treating NHS patients.  Regular checkups are key to early detection.

My mother died on 2nd September 2006, only a few weeks after diagnosis.

There was nothing that I could do about my mother's cancer.  But I can do this walk!

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Mouth Cancer Foundation Limited will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.

Paula

Update 31 August 2006

£350 raised so far, and my daughter has £80 on her page - over half way to her target.  Thanks so much to everyone who has dontated so far.

Mum was moved to the hospice today.  It's a much better place for her than the hospital and they are able to manage her pain more effectively.  She has a lovely room, and today looked relaxed and comfortable as she slept.

Update 2 September 2006

Mum died peacefully this morning.  My brother and I spent the night with her, and my sister-in-law was also with us when she went.  It was a relief to see her out of pain at last, but we are all a little shell-shocked as everything has happened and progressed so quickly.

Update 14 September 2006

Mum's funeral was on Tuesday 12th September.  It went as well as could be expected and we were so pleased to see so many of our friends there to support us.  I got up and read - something I never thought I'd be able to do in a million years.  I'm glad I did.

Sponsorship continues to come in - we have been overwhelmed by the generous donations from all over the world.  The internet community has shown itself to be a true community.  Thanks everyone, so much.  Donations now stand at £630 on my page, and £175 on my daughter's.  If we can reach £1,000 between us we'll be more than delighted.

We now have to get on with our lives and it still hasn't hit us yet.  Hopefully focusing on this walk will help us get through.

Update 6 October 2006

Between us our fundraising now stands at £980 - thanks again to everyone who's so generously donated.  We haven't even done any paper sponsorship forms for work/school yet.  Looks like we'll hit our £1,000 target.  The local paper contacted me yesterday for an article - all good publicity!

Update 18 November 2006

The walk is nearly upon us.  Off to London later today to stay with a friend and then do the walk in the morning.  The response from everyone has been overwhelming and the support we have received from friends has helped us so much during this difficult time.  Between us my daughter and I have raised over £1000 so far, and there's still more to come from offline donations.  Will post some photos of the event soon and this page will remain open until January.  Thanks again!
