Story
British Blind Sport is the UK's only national sports and physical activity charity exclusively for people with sight loss. In 2023, we'll be running the London Marathon (and the Brighton marathon just 3 weeks before!!!) and we want to raise as much money as possible for British Blind Sport. We really appreciate any and all donations.
Paul's Story
I grew up in Peterborough in a family of runners. My late Grandad, dad and brother all having taken part in the London Marathon. I was dragged along to a few races but never got the bug like they did.
Fast forward many years and 1 routine eye test later saw me in hospital the same day receiving emergency treatment for Glaucoma. My age bracket puts me in a rare 2% that contracts Glaucoma.. only me!!!!! Very swiftly my driving license and what felt like my independence was taken off me. My work & family life took a big hit with my mental health spiralling downhill.
I had heard about the group VI Runners Bristol but something was holding me back, I wasn't ready to take the plunge. Eventually I took the very daunting first step. Approximately 2 years and 6 operations later running is a huge part of my life and being part of a sporting community has changed my life.
I have taken part in a 10k and my first half marathon, taking part in these races alongside fully sighted people gives us such an amazing experience and I get such a rush. Having the VI group and amazing charities like British Blind Sport have really levelled the playing field and really shows that having a disability really does not mean the end and we really can do the same things as fully sighted people. Who knows what the future holds for myself and for the charities/people involved but having these experiences will stay with me forever.
Alice's Story
Running the London Marathon will be a bucket list moment for me. I started running 10 years ago as a way to manage my mental health. From the initial couch to 5K programme to an ultra marathon (where I vowed I'd never run far again..) running and the running community are a firm part of my 'stay well' tool kit. I've always wanted to complete a road marathon and this challenge will be a real milestone for me to celebrate how far I have come in my running journey.
I became a guide runner in 2022 when I joined the Bristol VI runners' group who meet weekly to run together (and enjoy a post-run pint at the pub). I was nervous before going along because I was constantly worried I would cause someone to trip over! Luckily, I was given some excellent tips from those I guided and I now absolutely love supporting others to get out in the fresh air and experience the joy that running can bring - it's the highlight of my week. Our group celebrates freedom in running which is exactly what British Blind Sport advocate for. I can't wait to run the Brighton Marathon and the London Marathon with Paul.
