Have you heard of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT)? It is one of the world’s largest and most respected wetland conservation organisations working globally to safeguard and improve wetlands for wildlife and people.
Founded in the UK in 1946 by the late Sir Peter Scott, today WWT complements its wetland conservation work carried out worldwide with a network of 9 UK visitor centres comprising of globally important wetland habitat. I will run close to each of the 9 centres to promote WWT in the local community and to raise as much sponsorship as I can.
Wetlands are essential to life on Earth. They not only store and clean our water, they protect against floods and nurture an enormous variety of life-forms, without which the planet - and its people - could not survive. All around the world, wetlands are being lost or damaged more rapidly than any other ecosytem because of land reclamation, changes to agriculture, pollution, water diversions and other developments. Such losses are catastrophic for all wildlife, for pushing many amphibians, water birds, reptiles, mammals and fish species close to extinction.
