Story
Those of you with good memories may well recall that around this time last year I walked on hot coals, and then, the next day, ran 10 miles. I know, I know, it was stupid...which is why, this year on the weekend of 30 Sept-1 Oct, I’ll be walking 20 feet on broken glass on the Saturday, and then running 10 miles on the Sunday. Much more sensible, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Why, you ask? Well, obviously because it amuses me to mistreat my feet in as silly a way as possible, but much more importantly because it’s in aid of Phoenix House.
PH is a charity which gives substance users the opportunity to rebuild their lives in a way that ends their dependence on drugs and alcohol. Last year when I did the fire walk, I was lucky enough to meet one of PH’s clients, a chap who’d managed to get himself off the drink and drugs and was now rebuilding his life – the look of relief and excitement in his eyes, even to a hard-hearted type like me, was genuinely touching. And Phoenix House have over 36 years of helping people, so you can imagine how many lives they’ve turned around.
So, to summarise: it’s a worthy cause, and it’s me being a bit daft – hopefully good enough reasons for you to feel you can say yes, when I ask you to sponsor me, which I’m about to do…. now: would you sponsor me, please? Oh go on.
If you want to come and see me do the Glass Walk, please drop me a line at feet@johnsoanes.co.uk, and I’ll be happy to let you know the where and when.
I’d like to raise a couple of hundred quid (if not more) for PH if I can, so any amount you can spare would be much appreciated – and if you use this page, PH can also get Gift Aid, that nifty tax-back thing that gets them 28% extra but doesn’t cost you an extra penny. I know, it’s clever stuff, innit?
Thanks !
John
