Story

Accessthedales will be donning on their rucksacks and heading into the hills for on April 10th 2016for the start of their new long distance trek, especially designed for all-terrain wheelchair users.

Debbie North, founder of accessthedales, and her husband Andy were keen hill walkers before ill health meant Debbie had to use a wheelchair. Since then the pair have been promoting accessibility in the countryside by pioneering new routes which are suitable for all-terrain wheelchair users.

Last April, Debbie and Andy completed their version of the Coast to Coast from St Bees on the west coast to Robin Hood’s Bay on the East Coast. Their route, which was mainly on bridleways and small country roads, took two weeks to complete. Their book, ‘In The Spirit of Wainwright’ a guide to the route which they took, will be available in July 2016. They raised £5,300 towards the cost of a TerrainHopper for the Calvert Trust Kielder.

Their latest long distance trek – ‘The Coast To Coast To Coast’ – a newly devised 81 mile route, will take them 7 days to complete. It starts on the shores of Semerwater, North Yorkshire, travelling onto Ullswater and ends on the shores of Lake Bassenwaite in Cumbria.

This year the pair will be joined by Judith Richards, Managing Director of Yorkshire Trike Tours.  This will be Judith’s first long distance walk and she is especially keen to join Debbie and Andy on the trek as both her and her husband Jason have been impressed by what accessthedales is doing to promote accessibly in the countryside.  Yorkshire Trike Tours are very proud to be part of this exciting adventure. Debs is an inspiration and accessibility to our stunning countryside for all is a joint passion!

Suzanne North will also be joining the team. She is both nervous and excited to be part of the adventure

They are hoping to raise the rest of the money needed to buy the TerrainHopper fot the Calvert Trust Kielder
