B was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 6 years ago in April, at the start of primary school. This year is her last one there, so we have decided to do some bike rides this summer to raise money for JDRF, a wonderful charity funding research into a cure.
While this diagnosis inevitably changed everything, it has become our new normal and neither us as a family or B have ever let her diabetes stop her from doing anything. So we thought we would put this to the test and cycle to Brighton together! We are doing training rides with other families, run by a local bike club, in advance of the big day, 30th April. It's going to be 54 miles, more than twice as far as she has ridden before. And after today's 25 miler, she now informs me she doesn't like hills that much!
It's not just the distance which is daunting but also quite how we are going to keep the blood in range for 10+ hours of riding. Halving the background insulin, halving any insulin we give for food, eating jelly babies every half hour...the training rides are also a chance to practice this as well. We also plan to have her wearing a flash glucose monitoring device called a Libre, which will allow us to track trends and get a reasonably accurate idea of her blood glucose level. This will also reduce the number of fingerpricks we need to do.
We're really looking forward to the challenge and as ever are immensely grateful for anything you can spare. Hope is in a cure!
