Story
World Land Trust is working in Borneo with conservation partner Hutan to extend forest habitat for Orang-utans along the Kinabatangan River in Sabah. This appeal aims to secure a corridor of land to link the Keruak Virgin Forest Reserve with the larger Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary (the Keruak Corridor).
River habitat is important for Orang-utans and other threatened species such as the Bornean Pygmy Elephant. It is urgent to secure this safe corridor before existing oil palm plantations are extended to the riverbank and permanently separate the reserves. If there is no protected corridor between the reserves, isolated Orang-utan populations could face extinction.
WLT aims to raise £1,000,000 to fund land purchase and associated costs, and we are delighted to report that we raised more than £725,000 during Big Match Fortnight in October 2013. (Note, not all Big Match Fortnight donations and pledges are showing on this page, but they will be as soon as they are processed.)
If we can raise more than our target it will go towards widening the corridor and making it even more valuable to wildlife.
