Fundraising for Maranatha Care Children
Story
Our book blog is one year old on 16 March. To celebrate, a few of us (mostly young teenagers) are holding a 24 hour sponsored Readathon on sat 24 March 2013. We aim to have reading going on continuously for 24 hours (yes, I know!). Progress (and fun updates) will be posted if we aren't too bleary eyed.
Please sponsor us! We have chosen to support Maranatha Care Children. They fund Siyakatala Youth Centre in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Siyakatala provides residential care for children and young people. Many of these children have lived on the street and never received any education.
Some of these children attend Protea Primary School which Maranatha also supports. Protea Primary is a school for traumatised children. Many of our friends and family members support this school by going and reading with the children who attend it.
Please donate to help give these children a better life and education. The money will go towards purchasing goods or services that Protea Primary has specifically requested. We are in direct contact with both Protea Primary and Maranatha Care Children and they can provide us with project updates.
Nanny Bee has reviewed for our blog and she said this about the children from Protea Primary:
"The Friends of Walmer Library runs a reading session for the children at the Protea Primary School in Port Elizabeth. We try to do this four or five times per year.
Ten children attend each session with their teacher. Each child sits with an adult, and reads. The reading capability differs a lot with each child, so sometimes the child will read to the adult and vice versa. We then have a little discussion about the book, and also chat to the child about books in general and how the library can play a part in someone's life. Then the children's librarian usually has an activity for them, during which we try to take part, encouraging them.After that, they are each given a pack each with some food and a drink, and each child receives a book to take away with them.
The response from the children has been very positive, and we always look forward to a morning with them."
