Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
This photograph was taken about 5 years ago of me and my mum, she already had vascular dementia (she got it at around 63) and sadly when my dad died (a few months before this picture was taken) she had to be put into a care home that specialised in dementia.
At this stage she could talk but she didn't make much sense, she was also still relatively mobile and could walk without assistance. Sadly 5 years on she is now completely bed ridden and can't do anything for herself (and has been for over a year), she hasn't been able to speak for at least a couple of years and she hasn't recognised my brother or I for well over a year.
The only good thing is that she always smiles and sometimes has a laugh to herself - so hopefully she is in a good place in her head.
Dementia is an extremely cruel disease - it's terminal and there is no cure. It is massively under funded compared to other major killers such as heart disease and cancer - much more needs to be done to find a cure or to at least prolong the deterioration of the person diagnosed with dementia.
It is the hardest thing to watch your parent being slowly but surely taken away from you - I really miss my mum, she hasn't been here for a number of years even though she's lying in that bed.
I would like to raise as much money as possible to help fund more research into Alzheimer's and Vascular Dementia and to help those people that already have it or need help looking after someone.
Any amount however big or small would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Tracey
