Dads of seriously ill children take on an epic challenge to raise vital funds for and awareness of Ty Hafan, the hospice for children in Wales

Story

Tŷ Hafan is one of the UK’s leading paediatric palliative care charities and offers comfort, care and support to life-limited children, young people and their families in the hospice, in the community and in their home so they can make the most of the time they have together.

Tŷ Hafan was a direct part of my life from 2006 - 2010.  As a younger brother of Greg,  who suffers with a life limiting illness, it was a magical place for us to unwind and get spoilt by all the wonderful staff, nurses and carers as a family.

Tŷ Hafan is a charity that has always been close to my heart. I have previously completed physical challenges in order to raise money for Tŷ Hafan. This time we are taking it one step further.

After driving up to North Wales on Wednesday 1st July, the team of Tŷ Hafan Dad’s, Uncles and Brothers of children who are or have been supported by the South Wales-based hospice prepare themselves for three days of almost non-stop physical exertion.

The Challenge:

On July 2nd (day 1), the team intend to set off at dawn to climb the five highest mountains in North Wales.

They are:

  1. Carnedd Llewellyn (Carneddau Range): Elevation – 1064m (3rd highest in Wales)
  2. Carnedd Dafydd (Carneddau Range): Elevation – 1044m (4th highest in Wales)
  3. Glyder Fawr (Glyderau Range): Elevation – 1001m (5th highest in Wales)
  4. Garnedd Ugain (Snowdon Massif): Elevation – 1065m (2nd highest in Wales)
  5. Snowdon (Snowdon Massif): Elevation – 1085m (Highest in Wales)

Late in the evening of day 1, the team is driven down to the Black Mountains in West Wales.  After a few hours rest, at dawn on July 3rd (day 2) they begin their assault on the five highest mountains in the Brecon Beacons.  These are:

  1. Fan Brydeiniog (Black Mountains):  Elevation – 802m
  2. Fan Hir (Black Mountains):  Elevation – 761m
  3. Waun Rydd (Central Brecon Beacons):  Elevation – 769m
  4. Pen-y-Fan (Central Brecon Beacons):  Elevation – 886m
  5. Cribyn (Central Brecon Beacons):  Elevation – 795m

After completing the second stage of the challenge, the team plan to rest in Brecon overnight on day 2 before the final part of the challenge.

At dawn on 4th July (day 3), the team will start the seven-hour, 52-mile cycle ride from Brecon to Cardiff Bay along the Taff Trail.

This may sound like madness, but these Dads, Uncles and Brothers of children who are supported by Tŷ Hafan have taken on challenges before.

Sadly, thousands of families in Wales live every day knowing their child’s life will be short. At the moment, they often face this without any care or support. Alone. Afraid. Isolated. Tŷ Hafan’s ambition is that when a child’s life will be short, no family should have to live it on their own.
