I turned 33 this morning (01/02/2019) and decided it was time to do something to help. My girlfriend has suffered with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome for over a year now and it has basically put our life on hold. I have slowly come to learn just how debilitating this condition is and the worrying thing is that in truth I have only lived with and seen a lesser form of the condition. It can leave people bed ridden and without the abilities to even care for themselves. There is no absolute cure known for the condition and sufferers often feel lost and without the help they require.
Here is some information from the ME association regarding the condition and the work they do:
What is ME?
ME (Myalgic Encephalopathy), or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, is an illness that blights the lives of 250,000 people in UK today. Even the smallest exertion can floor them; their joints and muscles ache unbearably; restful sleep eludes them; and ‘brain fog’ clouds even the smallest judgment. It changes their lives drastically – disrupting education; making employment impossible; and straining family relations to breaking point. People may be housebound or confined to bed for many months or years. There is no known cure.
The ME Association
Our mission is to support people with ME and their families through all stages of their illness.
We have been campaigning for years to have ME recognised as a severe neurological illness that deserves to be taken seriously. We are working tirelessly to promote research into the physical nature and causes of the illness so that it can be diagnosed quickly and in the hope that a cure, one day, can be found. We also support ME sufferers and their families through our ME Connect helpline. The money that you raise will go towards The ME Association’s work in these areas - campaigning, support and research.
Now a bit more information on me:
I've always had a bit of a skill for doing accents, with Irish being one I've always enjoyed dabbling in. Now I'm not saying that its faultless by any means and I'm sure if I tried it in a pub in Dublin to the wrong person then I could end up looking pretty stupid. But that surely just makes it all the funnier!
It was when I woke up on my 33rd birthday and I said the number thirty three back to myself in that particular accent that the idea to just keep going for an extended amount of time came to me. I will be carrying out the challenge for three months and three weeks, the final day will be Wednesday 22nd of May. Now there are going to be times where its going to be awkward, there are times when it's going to embarrassing and there are times where I'm just going to look like an absolute idiot, but all the more reason to donate.
We will hopefully be doing an event during the campaign with a view to extra fundraising and I'll be doing little video updates etc. via social media along the way. But for now please if you can just donate any amount (bigger the better) you can and I'll do my best to thank any of you with a voice message using my best Irish tones. If you have any questions about the whole thing just ask.
Thanks again!
