Thick-billed Parrots suffer from human pressures

With a world population of less than 4000, the Thick-billed Parrot struggles against degradation of habitat, loss of pine from harvesting and drug growers and the introduction of large numbers of cattle. Recent forest fires in some areas have caused further losses. In Madera, one of the last remaining breeding areas, Thick-bills nest exclusively in the aspens that are rapidly disappearing. Aspen trees in this area are dying off in great quantity, literally falling down around the parrots, sometimes with active nests inside.

Thick-billed Parrot preservation now relies on efforts to protect habitat and manage breeding efforts. The World Parrot Trust has funded studies to evaluate the long-term effects of translocation and habitat requirements for the Thick-billed Parrot and has participated in recovery meetings. WPT also funded the installation and general support of nest boxes to increase reproductive capability, and critical genetics studies by Dr. Tim Wright of New Mexico State University to determine how closely related the wild birds are, a possible detriment to their breeding and recovery. WPT has partnered with Instituto Technologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) to monitor and support wild nests. Long-term aid will focus on developing a habitat reserve, fostering local education initiatives, and encouraging sustainable resource use by local residents.
