Story
This page is in memory of my friend, David Greaves.
In June 2015, a month after his 30th birthday, Dave was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). MND is a devastating neurodegenerative condition which causes increasing muscle paralysis and a dramatically shortened life expectancy. MND kills more than 1/3 of people within a year of diagnosis, and more than 1/2 within 2 years. At present there is no treatment or cure.
For Dave, the course of the disease was swift and cruel. Within 5 months he was unable to use his hands, after nine he couldn't walk. Towards the end of his life he was unable to talk, eat or breathe without the assistance of a ventilator. Dave passed away in September 2016 - a week after his first wedding anniversary and 15 months after his diagnosis. He is missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.
Dave was a great friend, a true gent and a renaissance man who never took himself too seriously. He was the kind of person who would speak to someone he didn’t know on the tube and take time out of his day to speak to a homeless person. He had a sharp wit and a disgraceful sense of humour. Anyone who met Dave would remember him vividly.
I met Dave while we completed our history masters degrees together and went on to complete other several challenges together before his diagnosis, including the Istanbul and Paris Marathons and Ironman Wales in 2013. After his diagnosis he climbed up Kilamanjaro and had a children’s book published. He was a man mountain and continues to be an inspiration to me.
There is currently no cure or effective treatment for MND. Your donation can help change that. Please give generously in memory of Dave.
