In April 2005 'Team Darfur' will participate in the Polar Challenge - one of the toughest team races in the world. Braving temperatures as low as -45 degrees centigrade, the team will race 29 other teams to the Magnetic North Pole.
320 miles, 30 teams, 1 winner
Departing Polaris Base in northern Canada in mid-April 2005 the race is a three-leg journey lasting around four weeks covering approximately 320 miles, across broken ice-flows, enduring extreme temperatures and wind chill. Each member of the team will be required to pull a sled weighing 90 kgs. This is, unquestionably, the ultimate test of teamwork, endurance and the will to overcome seemingly impossible odds.
In May 2004, with all three of us heavily involved in the international response to the Darfur crisis, as well as our work across Sudan, we came across an advertisement for the Polar Challenge. At the time there was little global coverage and understanding of the crisis in Darfur. All three of us were (and remain) heavily involved in the growing international response and in particular MSF's work. Since MSF-Holland deployed its first teams to Darfur in late 2003, the size and scale of the crisis in Darfur has become clear. With over 250 international and 2500 national staff in 26 locations in Darfur the field, providing assistance to over 700,000 people, it is MSF's largest humanitarian operation. Ever.
Through our own personal involvement, we have become highly committed to the values of MSF and the impact that MSF has. With all five MSF sections now operational in Darfur we want to bring the work of this exceptional organisation to more people's attention.
