Story

Sylvia Doreen Lassiter (nee Standley)

29 May, 1935 - 10 December, 2009

Sylvia was born a coal miner’s daughter in Cymfelinfach, a mining village in South Wales.  When she was two years old her family moved to Eastleigh, Hampshire where she spent her formative years during World War II.

Sylvia married her childhood sweetheart Henry in September 1958.  They remained sweethearts for more than 51 years.

Sylvia and Henry emigrated to the United States in 1961 making their home first in Lexington, Massachusetts and since 1976 in San Diego, California where they raised their three children Robert, Amanda and Andrea.

In about 2005 Sylvia was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia and in 2007 she developed Richter’s Transformation/Syndrome a deadly complication of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia.  For two  years she fought a courageous, painful but ultimately  losing battle, eventually slipping away peacefully under sedation 10 December, 2009.

Although she spent many years in the United States and loved it, part of her was always in England and her beloved Wales with family and dear friends.

She graced this world for 74 years and touched so many lives in so many ways.  She leaves behind a legacy of cheerfulness, zest for life, humility, friendship (she never met a stranger) and a boundless love for everything and everyone.

For those who wish to, and are able, please donate whatever you can to Cancer Research UK in Sylvia’s name.

Donations will be earmarked to Cancer Research UK's non Hodgkin's Lymphoma research portfolio. Last year alone they provided almost £9million of funding into non Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Richter’s syndrome is a type of high grade non Hodgkin's Lymphoma that can occur in people who have chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

Thank you.
