Story

Dear friends,

Thank you for visiting my justgiving fundraising page and learn more about the cause I want to support.

I have taken a decision a few months ago: I want to support women who are marginalized and subject to abuse. It is a cause that is close to my heart and I want to start somewhere...now!

Together with a group of 11 international women I am raising money and awareness for Women for Women International (WfWI) – a non-profit humanitarian organization operating in some of the worst places on earth to be a woman. As a team we are aiming to raise SGD $100.000 so we need a lot of helping hands and every € and $ counts!

What brought the 12 of us together is the shared cause we want to support, the willingness to go way out of our comfort zones and our value for adventure. Together we will be trekking through the thick jungle of the Mentawai Islands Indonesia in November 2019 to immerse in the unique way of living of the Sakkudei, Sararakeit tribals. We will be trekking through sago fields, bush and jungle, crossing rivers and walking through slippery swamps to reach the tribe who still lives in harmony with nature and respects the jungle. We will dive into their daily lives, follow monkey hunters in the jungle, go fishing with the women and witness shamanic ceremonies. For 12 days we leave amenities behind we are so used to: no showers, bathroom and running water, instead we will be as close to nature as possible and in case you wonder...yes there are snakes, mosquitos and other creepy crawlers...and we might enjoy a meaty and juicy larvae as a treat!

With our expedition we are hoping to raise awareness and funds for Women for Women International so they can keep doing their great work. Since 1993 WfWI provides women survivors of war, conflict and abuse with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency. More than 478,000 women have been supported and there are more who need our help.

Please support me in raising money for this cause that empowers women to gain back their dignity. My trip is completely self-funded, so you will not be financing my expedition. Your donations are going directly to WfWI.

You can read more about the great work of WfWI below or at https://www.womenforwomen.org.uk or watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iarxgcit0gU

If you want to find out more about our expedition please reach out to me or check for updates here - I am more than happy to share now and after my experience! And any tips on how to prepare for this adventure is more than welcome ;-).

"Thank you" - "Danke", Susan

You want to know what your money can buy?

£27 (€31, US$ 35) could pay for Rights Awareness Training, so that a woman can learn that she is worthy of contributing to the decisions at home, including financial decisions, which may be traditionally handled by only men in the family.

£38 (€44, US$50) could pay for a goat, which can be raised for milk or cheese that can be sold at market, changing a woman’s life by giving her an income and status in her community.

£80 (€92, US$105) could pay for a bicycle, so a woman can quickly transport her goods, helping her grow and expand her business and become more self-sufficient.

£156 (€180, US$204) could pay for Men’s Engagement training, to give a man a place to explore gender, masculinity, and understand the benefits to families and communities when women are empowered.

£500 (€580, US$655) could pay for ten sewing machines, to enable women to set up a tailoring business and provide an income for their families.

£3,000 (€3478, US$ 3934) could pay for a greenhouse, for a woman to grow organic herbs to sell at market.

About Women for Women International (WfWI)

When there is an outbreak of war or violence, women suffer most – they experience trauma, sexual violence and the death of loved ones. After the conflict is over, the world’s attention moves on, but these same women are left to rebuild their families and communities. Women for Women International supports women who live in some of the world’s most dangerous places. Women enroll on the charity’s year-long training program, where they learn how to earn and save money, improve their family’s health and make their voices heard at home and in their community.
