We stand for everyone affected by dementia to find a cure

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My mother-in-law, father and mother have died from various forms of dementia. It is a ghastly condition, which robs the person of their dignity and inexorably destroys the person they once were. The sooner we can find a cause for it by supporting such valuable research, the sooner we can alleviate all the suffering that people have to experience.

Today, approximately 850,000 people in the UK suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

Dementia affects one in 14 people over the age of 65, one in six over the age of 80.

It is estimated that there are an additional 15,000 people under the age of 65 suffering from the condition.

There will be over one million sufferers by 2021.

60,000 deaths a year are directly attributable to dementia.

Delaying the onset of dementia by 5 years would reduce deaths directly attributable to dementia by 30,000 a year.

The Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago de Compostela, also known in English as The Way of St James, are a collection of old pilgrimage routes which cover all Europe. They all have Santiago de Compostela in north west Spain as their final destination. For more than 1000 years pilgrims have walked along the Camino de Santiago.

It will take me 5 weeks, starting in  St Jean Pied de Port and finishes in Santiago de Compostela (about 780 km later, or 500 miles). I have wanted to do something to raise money for the Alzheimer's Research Trust for a long time, and through this experience I hope to contribute a significant amount to a worthy cause.

I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide, and thank you in advance for any donations you may wish to make.
