Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Motor Neurone Disease occurs when Motor Neurones, which are nerve cells that live in the brain and spinal column, die and signals stop getting through to muscles. The muscles waste and people living with MND live in a body that gradually shuts down. They can lose the ability to walk, talk, eat and eventually breath. All the time the mind is unaffected as are all major senses so the personal living with MND is fully aware of what is happening, still feels pain, but can do nothing about it. It is also very traumatic for their friends and family who have to watch it all happen.
There is no known cause of MND and currently there is no cure. Every diagnosis of MND is terminal. The prognosis from diagnosis o death is 2 to 5 years, however 50% of those diagnosed die within 14 months and 30% don't survive a year. MND can affect anyone at anytime and only around 10% of cases are hereditary, 90% are sporadic.
There are around 5,000 people and families affected by MND in the U.K and on average 6 people die in the U.K. every day.
The money that is raised for the Ian Pratt MND Foundation will help to fund research, that hopefully one day will lead to a cure, and support families currently living with MND.
