Story
This is a new one for me.
For the past 6 years at the Cannes Lions festival, whilst sunning it up on the Croisette with a beer (or three) , I've been there to cheer in and support friends and colleagues of the FireFlies tour as they roll into town, occasionally harbouring some distant desire that one day I'd consider trying to take part.
Cancer, bizarrely, seems so common that there is hardly anyone I know who hasn't been touched by it, either directly or a few steps removed. I've had too many close friends affected in recent years - some still undergoing treatment, many who have pulled through, though some did not and some sadly will not.
So this is the year, indeed in only four weeks time on 15 June I'll be pulling on the red jersey and setting off for Cannes myself.
Despite having a few marathons under my belt, I'm no natural athlete. This is no marathon and this is going to hard - really, really hard. . The Fireflies Tour is 1000km from Geneva to Cannes, over the Alps, taking in some of the most famous and gruelling climbs of the Tour de France. 25,512 metres of climbing is about three times Mount Everest. It's inspired by the courage and commitment it takes to fight cancer, and raise as much as we can towards the research and treatment of blood cancers, at the Hammersmith hospital London.
I've only been cycling seriously for about 9 months, and the support from the rest of the Fireflies crew has been immense. The support from everyone else is equally important, and nothing says support like donating your hard earned cash for a truly worthwhile cause - of which this is undeniably one.
Thanks in advance, on behalf of the whole team.
