Rafi Solaiman and his family are good friends of our family. This is his story and the inspiration for me to do this 100 mile cycle sportive in aid of the Children’s Hospital Charity.
The pictures show Rafi a few days before his brain haemorrhage, days after it and where he is now.
Before November 11 2012 Rafi was a happy, healthy and lively 12 year old lad. On that day Rafi suffered a catastrophic brain haemorrhage. He nearly lost his life, but thanks to the skill and care at Sheffield Children’s Hospital he survived and began the long process of recovery and rehabilitation.
He has had several setbacks including a second bleed one month into his recovery,
He has been on intensive care on 4 different occasions. Due to the damage caused by these bleeds he needs lots of rehabilitation before he comes home including physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and hydrotherapy.
Sadly Rafi is not the only child dependent on this hospital. There are many other children like Rafi who have required the facilities provided by the Children's Hospital Charity - around 245000 children use the hospital every year and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital is 1 of 4 specialist children's hospitals in the country so serves a large area.
The Children's Hospital Charity is a truly amazing charity that helps make the hospital nicer for patients and families. As a result of some of the charities fund raising, Rafi’s family have been able to live in accommodation within the hospital, allowing them to be with Rafi all the time. The charity also funded the CT scanner which Rafi has had to use many times and lots of other state of the art equipment that can't be funded by the NHS. The charity recently funded the renovation of the old hydrotherapy pool which Rafi has used and had excellent results. The charity is currently raising funds for a massive hospital renovation to make a better, more comfortable place for children to be treated. Lots of money is also being put into research for the prevention and cure of childhood illnesses.
