30 Years, 30 Mountains 4 ICR (The Institute of Cancer Research)
There are over 200 different types of cancer and unfortunately, many of us have been or will be touched by cancer at sometime in our lives, be it through a family member, friend, work colleague, neighbour or even ourselves. The Institute of Cancer Research is one of the world's most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. Some of their greatest discoveries are:
- They identified many of the cancer causing chemicals in cigarette smoke and coal tar.
- They were the first in Europe to develop chemotherapeutic agents, the drugs they developed with the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust are still in use, worldwide, more than 50 years later.
- They identified the breast cancer gene BRCA2, which allowed families with a history of breast cancer to be assessed for future risk.
- They transformed care for advanced prostate cancer and discovered and developed a life extending prostate cancer drug.
The list of discoveries and achievements that the ICR have made over the years goes on and on and we, through this page, are hoping to raise £5000 to help the ICR to continue their fantastic ground breaking work and continue to bring more drugs, for the treatment of cancer, to trial.
