Brighton Poem-a-thon: a poetry marathon to help refugees!!
Over ten years ago I met a woman from Sudan with a young child. She came to visit my shed in Limerick, Ireland, and explained that she would have loved to have had such a shelter when she was a refugee, living in desperate straits in a camp.
As part of the Brighton Poem-a-thon, I'll be reading poems about shelter by different poets, with the aim of raising as much money as possible for today's refugees. Please sponsor me and support the work of the Refugee Council.
Brighton Poem-a-thon takes place between 12 noon and 10 pm on Sunday 11th December, a relay of 60 poets and readers will read for 8 minutes each throughout the day at Komedia, 44-47 Gardner Street, Brighton. BN1 1U. Many amazing poets will be in attendance.
Entry is FREE all day!
I'll be on at around 8.10 pm, so all my Brighton friends, relations and fans should get themselves down there, cheer the poets on and buy lots of Tombola tickets. (By the way, I've already been offered a considerable sum not to read my poetry so that joke is wearing a bit thin.)
Audience members can join us at any time throughout the day, staying for as long or as short a time as they wish (not less than ten minutes in my case!). There will be refreshments, a bookstall, a silent auction and a Tombola, as well as information about our charity.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
So dig deep. Think how many refugees will need our help and support this winter season.
With warmest greetings
John Davies (aka Shedman)
