Story
Thank you for stopping by and taking an interest in my expedition. For those of you who know me, I never say no to adventure and being outside of my comfort zone. But this expedition and its cause hit very close to home- This would be my third visit to Greenland and each visit has shown that climate change is very real in this part of the world.
The only way we will solve the existential threat of climate change is to include everyone in the solutions. Yet women are far too often excluded from decision making at all levels of environmental policy making.
Time is not on our side, I sincerely hope that my little cycle on the other side of the world will inspire you, whether you are a #climatewarrior or #bethechange #heforshe wannabe because climate change and gender equality is everyone's business. We have to think bigger, act quicker, and include everyone!
Your generosity will warm my heart immensely.
THE EXPEDITION- WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
In March 2020 (and on my Birthday!), I will be joining 9 other intrepid ladies who will attempt to be the first all-women team to fat-bike 250km across snow & ice on the Arctic Circle Trail where temperatures are dropping to –30 degrees. This trip will be entire self-funded and all donations will go straight to UN Women UK.
THE CAUSE
Climate related disasters have led to the loss of 700 thousand lives, 1.7 billion people affected and economic losses of USD 1.4 trillion. The effects of climate change are felt most dramatically by those living in extreme poverty, the majority of whom are female and are are more vulnerable in crises and post disasters situations.
UN Women UK was created in 2010 to direct UN activities on gender equality issues. Before then, no one organisation had the authority to promote gender equality on a global scale and address the serious challenges facing women and girls everywhere.
Your direct donation to UN Women UK, and their programmes will support the economic empowerment of women in rural areas of Asia, more specifically, in Vietnam, Bangladesh and Nepal- countries most affected by climate change.
Their aim is to remove the social and cultural barriers that prevent women and girls from achieving their potential. These barriers exist in public policy, educational opportunity, conscious or unconscious bias, and economic empowerment.
HOW YOUR DONATION WILL BENEFIT-( There is no small donation, every bit helps)
- $25 could provide leadership and self-esteem workshops to women and girls to give them the skills and confidence to response to these climate risk challenges.
- $100 could help to set up livelihood projects that empower women business leaders in agriculture to manage their business in at risk areas.
- $500 could help us to work with government to develop Post-Disaster Needs Assessments to inform disaster recovery strategies and national disaster management planning
- $1000 could allow us to keep a safe house open for women and children fleeing natural disaster for one week.
Your support, be it in spirit or financially means a lot to me.
xoxo
