Story

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research: SPL Pound the Grounds

UPDATE:07/06/2010

At around 3:30PM our team of intrepid volunteers completed the SPL Pound the Grounds journey at Pittodrie Stadium in Aberdeen. After 2 days touring the 12 Scottish Premier football grounds on the West and East of Scotland the legs were weary but the smiles were wide. The event was a resounding success and ran like clockwork. All of the guys thoroughly enjoyed this unique event and will take away memories that will last a long time.

The hospitality extended to us by all of the clubs was fantastic with special moments such as the tour of Parkhead, the crossbar challenge at the Hibs training grounds and the chance to hold the Scottish Cup at Tannadice making the 2 days extra special.

All of the guys would like to say a massive thank you to all of the clubs and to everyone whose generousity will ensure that Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research will receive almost double our £10000 target.

This site will remain open to donations for the next couple of months so if you would still like to donate then your support will be very much appreciated.

Thanks Campbell and the Pound the Grounds Team

The Background:

On the 29th of March 2007 my 4 year old son, Lewis Blair, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). When we were told that our son, who had been happy and healthy until that point, had a life threatening illness our world was turned up side down.

Thankfully, due to the work of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and their many tireless fundraisers, the research that has been undertaken over the last 50 years and the advancements in treatment as a result of this research has significantly improved the survival rate of people diagnosed with blood cancers and disorders including leukaemia, Hodgkin’s and other lymphomas, and myeloma.

Lewis had to undergo intensive treatment throughout his stay in hospital, but thankfully he went into remission and he continues to do well to this day. However, we need to ensure that all children, and adults, continue to be given the best chance of survival for all the different types of blood cancers.

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research needs to raise more than £100 million over the next five years to sustain their investment. They receive no Government grants and their life-saving research depends entirely on voluntary donations.

Since Lewis was diagnosed my family and I have made a commitment to do as much as we possibly can to continue to raise funds for this fantastic charity. Over the last 2 years we have undertaken runs, cycles, walks, football tournaments and quiz nights in order to raise as much money as we possibly can. We have had fantastic support from friends, family and work colleagues who continue to dig deep to support our fundraising efforts.

However in an effort to increase fundraising potential, maximise reach and raise more awareness of this charity I have decided to organise a more unique event.

As an avid football fan and a keen runner I thought it would be a great idea to try and combine these 2 passions in order to come up with a unique fundraising event.

The Event:

Titled SPL Pound the Grounds our aim is run just over 1 mile (5 laps) in each of the 12 SPL football grounds over a 2 day period, basically the equivalent of running approximately a half marathon in 13 iconic sporting locations.

By undertaking a group event, all focussed on 1 charity, fundraising potential is increased, as is the ability to raise awareness of the charity.

I have assembled a crack team of athletes (OK, 40-50 friends and colleagues!) who are planning to undertake the event on the 5th/6th of June 2010.

With the fantastic support of all of the SPL teams we will be running around each of the grounds in the West Coast on the 5th of June and the East Coast on the 6th of June.

Our Aim? To raise in excess of £10,000 through sponsorship
