On Tuesday 12th January 2010, Haiti was struck by a catastrophic earthquake measuring 7.0 on the richter scale, approximately 9.3 miles from the capital Port-Au-Prince. They were also numerous aftershocks, fourteen of them measuring between the magnitudes of 5.0 and 5.9.

Most of Port-Au-Prince's major landmarks were significantly damaged or destroyed in the earthquake, including the Presidential Palace, National Assembly building and the main jail. Additionally all hospitals were destroyed or so badly damaged that they have been abandoned.

The Red Cross say that up to 3 million people are affected, with more than 100,000 dead.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and have already suffered a number of natural disasters, including 4 hurricanes and storms in 2008 that killed hundreds.
