Story
Thanks for visiting my page. I am raising money for ParalympicsGB by taking part in the Deloitte Ride Across Britain cycling from John O'Groats to Lands End between the 11th and 19th of June 2011...here's why...
I decided to buy a brand spanking new road bike at Christmas (done a bit of mountain biking before, but never much endurance stuff...) and give 'proper' cycling a go.
A couple of weeks later the opportunity came up to join a team from Deloitte, my employer, to ride from John O'Groats to Lands End over a 9 day period. 'How hard can it be?' I thought, and its for a great cause...so i got involved.
From my training so far I've decided it can be pretty hard. Yeah its fine when its flat, but hauling myself up even short hills is painful (I don't think I have a traditional cyclist's build), as is sitting on a bike for several hours at a time. I am currently building up my training with a long ride every weekend, and racing buses in to work once or twice a week - it's tough at the moment but hopefully it will prepare me for the challenge of climbing some real hills (I hear Scotland and the Lake District both have a few).
I am raising money for ParalympicsGB - its a really great cause. They support Britain's paralympic athletes - currently Paralympics GB are facing the most crucial event in their history - a home games. This once in a lifetime event gives them a chance to make a lasting difference to Paralympic sport and the perceptions of disability in the UK, and they need help to make it happen.
ParalympicsGB receive no funding for its core activities, and so have to raise funds to ensure the British team has the best support when it matters the most. Training camps, medical provisions, transportation and kit are just a few of the things ParalympicsGB has to provide our Paralympic athletes.
Help ParalympicsGB achieve their aims, and change perceptions of disability sport in Britain. The training and pain I will go through pales in comparison to the dedication shown by our Paralympic athletes in achieving remarkable levels of performance, and they really couldn't do that without the support of Paralympics GB.
